Stig Kristoffersen asked:

OnLive was presented at the game developers conference GDC in San Francisco on March 24th 2009. This service enable you to stream the content of the game as you play it. Simply explained you will see live a HD-Video of the ongoing gaming performed on a server miles away from you. This means you can play big and powerful games that you usually need a monster PC with the best graphic performance available to you. Even a small laptop PC, Mac or even through a small gadget connected to your TV, you can play any game on your TV. The need for very expensive gaming PC’s is gone with the wind. You will not need to upgrade your PC just because the game demands more graphic power or CPU performance. All you need is internet connection and a normal computer. The news about this service can mean a revolution to how games are distributed and were received with enthusiasm at the conference. How is it possible to perform streaming of highly interactive games, when YouTube service is struggling with their performance of online videos? The question was raised and answers given through demonstration of this service. OnLive has been developed over 7 year’s time now, and for the first time shown to the public on March 24th on heir pres conference in San Fransisco. It gives us a chance to revolutionize the way we do gaming, how developers pulish games, and how the consumer will use the games. It will change things says Steve Perlman, the man behind OnLive service concept. Perlman developed the streaming solution for QuickTime when he worked at Apple, and has with him the former Eidos CEO Mike McGarvey on the OnLive service. You will have immediate access to all the latest high technological games available to any consol or PC, just by your fingertips. They will make the games accessible immediately and you only need to press on the game button you want to play, and there you go. There will not be need for any downloading or need to patch anything. There will be no physical media at all. You will have access to the games through your web browser or TV and you will no longer need a special machine for the purpose of playing your favorite game. Whether you use OnLive on a cheap PC without any graphic card, or on a cheap Mac, does not matter as long as you have a web browser and a plug-in on your browser on under a Megabyte, you are gaming. If you have a TV, all you need is a cheap box attached to the TV and you are gaming here as well. In theory all this sounds great and potentially easy to do, but how is it working in practical terms? The only that is needed of your computer or box at home is the power to decompress the video that arrives home at your place from the game server where the OnLive service is located. These servers are special made for the purpose of computing the highly advanced graphic games presented to you at home. The video will reach home to without any experience of latency and to be experienced as if you played it on your local machine. OnLive has developed a special streaming technology for interactive media different from the linear streaming technology which is used in ordinary video transfers. This new technology has according to Perlman minimized the latency to a level not recognizable to a human. The latency will be around one millisecond, and you really have to see it before you believe it. The demand to the broadband you have will depend upon what kind of screen you have on your equipment at home. For an ordinary screen you will need 1,5 Mbps, while for a HD TV you will need maximum 5 Mbps, dependant upon the game itself. This of course eliminates those who still are on ADSL or similar bandwidths. Perlman and McGarvey played the game called “Crysis” together on a big screen at the conference. McGarvey used a cheap Dell laptop that would never be able to play this game in the quality seen on the screen.. Perlman played via a micro consol connected to a TV, and both these units talked nicely together via the OnLive server around 80 kilometers away from where the demonstration took place. McGarvey also demonstrated a baseball game on a Mac Book, a machine which was hardly meant to play any game on it, but through the web browser plug-in on the OnLive service played the game which usually needs a PC with a graphics card for thousands of dollars. The service opens up for purchase and rental business models of absolutely all stored games, videos of game plays and other things stored on these servers. This enable you to continue a game anytime from anywhere you want to. It also eliminates the piracy problem which haunts the gaming industry today. Ten developers like EA, THQ, Ubisoft and Atari has supported this development from the start and has made 16 games available at the moment. All these games will be demonstrated at the GDC for people to see how they are experienced at the conference floor. The service is planned launched in North America at the end of 2009, and will secure the gaming industry from piracy at a larger extent than before. It also makes it possible to make games available at a less cost than before as distribution costs should go down. However, it remains to see how these servers will resist the hackers and their attempts to disrupt these services. There has not been set any launch date for the service outside North America, but its promised to be launched as soon as possible after the North American launch. The cost of this service is not mentioned, but the goal is to reduce the cost to the game consumer, as he or she will not need to buy expensive hardware which has become expensive and a constant need for upgrade at a certain cost as well. This service will transfer the money use of gamers from hardware to software.

Create a video blog

Joe Schmieder asked:

Whether you already have a home game room or you’re thinking of adding one to your home there are some “essential things” you’ll need to make your game room “Ultimate”. It’s true you may not need every single one of these items or you may not have the time, space or money to add every single one. But if you do have the time, space and or money and want an “Ultimate” Home Game Room then check out the top 6 items (in order of importance) that you’ll need for your game room to achieve ultimate “game room friendly” status.

#1 Game Table

Since you’re creating a home game room the number one must-have is the game table. Now which game table or tables you have is of course a personal choice. The two best game tables for home game rooms are billiard tables and shuffleboard tables. They’re the best because of multi-player use, the skill of the game and the fun competition each one brings to your home.

If your game room is big enough it’s always fun to have a combination of two different game tables. The best combo idea would be to have a billiard or shuffleboard table plus either an air hockey, foosball or ping-pong table. They say “Variety Is The Spice Of Life” and that is especially true for a home game room.

#2 Three More Great Games

The second must-haves are more great games. Again this is a home game room and to be “Ultimate” you’ll need at least three more great games. These are games that will compliment your table games and add even more variety. The types of games that fit into this category are: arcade games, indoor basketball games, bowling games, crane games, dart games, pinball machines, football games, golf games, pachinko/pachislo games and slot machines.

There are other games you could add but this is a good list to get you started on the right track to creating a fun family game room. These three additional great games are just enough to keep everyone happy. Any less and you could lose that ultimate status, any more and your home game room could become cluttered. A home game room that’s cluttered with games will lose its uniqueness!

#3 – Jukebox

So now that you have the games and everyone is having a blast you’ll want to add some music. The best way to add music is with a jukebox. Stereo systems are good also but they don’t give you that “Ultimate” game room look and feel that a jukebox does.

Don’t worry there is a large assortment of jukeboxes available. Personally I prefer a jukebox from the 1940s. The old songs from the 1920s-1940s are great for all ages and they’re a nice change from the norm. There are some really catchy tunes from those years!

But if you’re not an oldies fan then there are other jukeboxes, like the ones that play 45rpm records. If those are still too old for you then a CD jukebox will do the trick. Some hold a hundred CDs giving you the ability to add a large assortment of music that would be perfect for any occasion. Also the jukeboxes look vintage 1940-ish. Finally if you love technology there are digital jukeboxes. They don’t look so much like a traditional jukebox but you can download music right to them using various methods like from a home computer.

# 4 Game Room TV

The fourth item you’ll need is a Game Room TV. It’s great to have a jukebox and music but when the big game is on New Year’s Day you’ll want your Game Room TV. Whether it’s a 13inch TV attached to your ceiling or wall or a large plasma TV doesn’t matter. It’s having the TV that bumps your game room up to the “Ultimate” level.

Now one of the best TVs to have in a home game room if you have the room is the projector TV with a movie screen. Having one of those is like having your own mini theatre in your home and they’re great for watching sports. It’s probably not a good idea to use one of these TVs for everyday use as the projector bulbs have a limited lifetime. You can however buy a replacement bulb but they can get expensive on some models. The bulbs usually last around 3000 hours and that is plenty for home game room use.

#5 – Refrigerator

The fifth must-have is the refrigerator. The reason being that if you’re creating an ultimate game room then you’re most likely planning on having parties with family and friends. A refrigerator that holds a couple cases of your favorite drink is perfect. You don’t need something large and fancy.

The reason these are good is that you won’t have everyone trouncing into your kitchen all day and night to get a drink. Also it helps keep the party in your game room not to mention your kitchen floors clean. On top of that they’re great for storing extra food for everyday use if your main refrigerator if full.

#6 Game Room Bathroom

The last must-have item on our list is a Game Room Bathroom. Like the refrigerator above it keeps the foot traffic to a minimum throughout the house if you have a bathroom in your game room. Plus adding that additional bathroom to your home is great if you have parties because someone always needs to “go” when your one bathroom is occupied.

Besides the added benefit during parties, adding another bathroom to a home usually increases a homes value. That is always a good thing and it’s just another reason why a bathroom in the game room is the number six must-have item.

There are many more items that can be added to your home game room. For example neon signs, clocks, pictures, posters, pub lights and so on. But this is a list of must-haves to push your game room up to the ultimate level.

Of course not everyone has the room or the money to add a bathroom to the game room. Or has the space to add so many different games. That’s ok because game rooms aren’t about having the biggest and best things. They’re about having fun with family and friends. Also creating the “Ultimate Game Room” isn’t done overnight. It takes time and that is part of the fun in bringing your game room to life. Set a budget if you need to and take as much time as you like in adding your favorite game room items. In the meantime have fun using your game room with family and friends as much as possible. And never forget that “Families That Play Together, Stay Together”.

gaming

Sky Games asked:

Total Blockout is an abstract strategy board game for one or more players (currently limited to two players in the computer version). As with many polymino-styled games, this game requires exceptional spatial skills. What makes it unique from other such games is it\’s need for its players to develop single-move strategies in line with an overall game plan. Furthermore, constraints have been placed in the selection of pieces available during your turn, requiring extraordinary memorization of pieces used in previous moves. There are many solutions to the puzzle. However, you will soon see just how difficult it is to find just one solution given these pattern constraints.

Total Blockout is new to the gaming industry, with a launch date of December 18, 2008. The developer, SKY Games, is actively pursuing quality endorsements and awards from distinctive associations and societies. Examples include, but are not limited to, Mensa Select, Teachers Choice, National Association of Parenting Publications, Parent\’s Choice, Oppenheim Toy Portfolio, Creative Child magazine and many more.

In time, we hope that Total Blockout will not be just another game, but a true classic, recognized as a household name. You can help SKY Games bring more quality gaming experiences and their related benefits by sharing your positive experience with others. Thank you for visiting our site and hopefully testing your skill with at http://www.totalblockout.com

How to play:

There are 7 groups of 7 pieces each, with each group representing a value of 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 or 7. Thus, 49 pieces total to complete the board.

The player starts with placing a piece with value 1, then 2, then 3,4,5,6 and finally the largest piece with a value = 7. The cycle repeats itself until the player has nowhere to place a piece.

Piece selection does not change, rather the group is reduced each time by the individual selection made, so memory of pieces left to play the successing rounds is key.

Though this game was designed with entertainment in mind, we came to recognize the multiple benefits this game offers to all who play. Firsts and foremost, the game is adaptable to people of all ages. Children can benefit from the development of spatial attributes, configuring sizes and shapes within borders. Teens can develop early logic and strategic abilities, exercising the mind while common video games offer little, if any, mental growth. Adults can take challenge themselves or compete with others across the globe to learn new approaches to strategy. The elderly can also benefit by regular play, prolonging, if not preventing, the deterioration of memory and other cerebral functions.

Unless you\’re a genius and cannot only complete the algorithms for multiple solutions, but have the memory to make your moves within the controlled sequence, you will be both entertained and smarter from the experience. www.totalblockout.com

The higher the total number of squares filled on the gameboard, the higher your score.
